Facteur! is a connected object which links a primary school class in France with another class abroad. Via a printer built into the module, the children receive drawings, texts and photos from their foreign classmates. At regular intervals, the pupils talk about and compare their cultures. The sending module lets children reply and send their own messages and drawings in turn! The aim? To ignite and fuel the spark of curiosity for other cultures. The pupils experience interculturality, foreign languages and diversity. What’s more, the communication is entirely digital so it really brings out the children’s creativity and manual skills. So… has the postman been?
“ Simon’s project seeks to promote new modes of learning in primary schools using digital environments. Facteur! (Postman!) is a connected object that connects a primary school in France with a school in another country to make pupils more aware of other cultures and encourage them to learn foreign languages. His concept is the result of a clever combination of a camera/scanner and a printer in a “mailbox”. No screens, no keyboards and definitely no computers! To send a message or a drawing, you just have to post it! The recipient class which has the same set-up receives the identical content! To reach this simple, fun and educational result, Simon involved the CP class (6-7 years old) of Madame Hilbey, a teacher at Aimé Césaire School, at various stages of the project.
Facteur! is a brilliant illustration of a co-design and iteration process with the end users. ”
