Learning English by walking down the street? It’s possible with Deixis. This tool for learning foreign languages uses play and virtual reality to take a different approach to teaching. It livens up the traditional way of learning a foreign language. Thanks to a virtual reality headset, the learner “leaves” the classroom and wanders through an urban environment. By making different hand movements, the name of the objects in the vicinity appears. For example, when you point to a building, the word building appears. The learner can also converse with a passerby, thanks to multiple choice answers. Following in the footsteps of Duolingo or Memrise, Deixis makes learning fast-moving, interactive and fun.

" Deixis is a project about learning foreign languages using virtual reality. The idea is to use immersion and the feeling of physical presence for educational purposes. By confronting people with a realistic situation, their alertness and attention is stimulated which boosts learning, just like language-learning trips abroad. “Deictics” are words or expressions which refer to a context-based reality; what is interesting about Marc’s approach is that he offers a coherent and explicit reference system using virtual reality techniques.
A student in Immersive UX Design, Marc naturally focused on non-intrusive and intuitive interfaces which cleverly exploit the concept of multimodality, combining sight, voice and gestures. In order to carry his project through to completion, he successfully brought on board a team of specialists in linguistics, teaching, languages and cultures. The demonstrator which he came up with is particularly coherent and shows the potential of virtual reality for learning applications. "
