A new step for a top school for digital design
A pioneer in the field of digital technology for over 15 years, the school offers a variety of training programs ranging from the 2-year advanced vocational diploma to the Master’s degree which prepares designers for professions in the digital sector and for digital transformation in all areas. The school’s pedagogical approach combines horizontality, professional input and expertise on digital innovation and a range of courses combining different career approaches.
The creation of the READi Design Lab, a creative platform for experimental research, in March 2011, set out to coordinate the activities of teaching, the business world and research around the development of use-centered innovations in the field of information and communication technology.
A Human Machine Design Lab to explore the coexistence of human beings and machines
READi (Applied Experimental Research in Interaction Design) became the Human Machine Design Lab in 2018. This new direction enables L’École de design to get involved in the area of digital innovation in its most recent forms: Artificial Intelligence, robotics and cobots, virtual, augmented and mixed reality, connected objects and spaces, etc. Media Design, another experimental platform devoted to information, communication and entertainment will see the light of day in 2020. The direction of the Design Lab remains unchanged with director Grégoire Cliquet still at the helm. The experimental platform Human Machine Design Lab will support a block of training programs under the guidance of Arnaud Le Roi.
MDes programs devoted to the theme of Human Machine Design...
The school is also updating its MDes Master’s programs in digital culture in order to be fully in line with market developments and the needs of professionals.
The new Human Machine Design programs offer student designers from different educational backgrounds (Interaction Design, industrial design, spatial design, graphic design, game design or Motion Design) the opportunity to explore the impacts and new experiences made possible by recent developments in digital innovation. These new programs will be on offer in September 2019:
• Machine UX Design MDes program: Artificial intelligence and big data, robotics and cobots, new forms of immersion in virtual, mixed and augmented reality: technological development raises the question of a new cohabitation between human beings and machines which calls for new design solutions. This program aims to explore this emerging discipline by coming up with innovative life scenarios and interfaces.
Areas of application: industrial applications, health, transport and mobility initiatives, robotics, cobots.
• Tangible UX Design MDes program: This MDes program explores the notion of tangibility and materiality of information for designing smart connected objects and spaces.
An UX Design option is also possible as part of the International MDes course, fully taught in English.
Areas of application: recreational applications, connected objects, collaborative working, mobile services, ubiquitous computing.
...and MDes programs devoted to the theme of Media Design Design
In addition, L’École de design is developing its Master’s programs in the fields of information design, media and entertainment. Two programs dedicated to new forms of narrative will also be available in September 2019:
• Media & Entertainment MDes program: This program looks at the new forms of experience and interactive fiction offered by digital technology, virtual, mixed and augmented reality, interactive transmedia systems, augmented scenography and video game experiences.
Areas of application: video games, serious games, leisure activities, events, museography, communication, audiovisual sector.
• Information Design MDes program: This program examines different narrative modes of reality in a context of exponential production of digital data and transformation of the media economy, from graphic representation to designing innovative services related to data, information and knowledge. It is based on studies in various fields including visual identity and editorial treatment of data, graphic semiology and cartographic representations of information. This program is taught in English and will be reserved for French and international students on a parallel admission track.
All of these programs lead to a Master’s Design Degree accredited by the French Ministry of Higher Education and issued by L’École de design Nantes Atlantique since 2002.
