University residence
L’École de design has a partnership with the CROUS , which manages the university halls of residence. A certain number of rooms in a nearby student residence, Chanzy, are reserved by L’École de design for international students. As there are not enough rooms for all international students, priority is given to students coming from outside of the European Union.

In order to apply for one of these rooms, students must contact L’École de design’s housing officer by email at accueil@lecolededesign.com and not contact the CROUS directly. These rooms can only be allocated after the student has been accepted to study at L’Ecole de design.

> Health insurance

Regarding health insurance, all students are entitled to coverage under the French national student health insurance scheme ("sécurité sociale étudiante").
Most EU citizens will have signed up for health insurance in their country of origin. Please bring with you your European health insurance card.

European Students
If you already have health insurance coverage in your country, you do not need to sign up for the French State health insurance. In this case, you must bring your European health insurance card.
Students who are not covered will need to sign up for the “sécurité sociale” (French governement insurance). The price is €215 for one year (2016/2017).
The international office will help you with the formalities when you arrive.

Non-European students
If you are under 28 years old, you are obliged to sign up for the French social security system, which covers costs for your health care. The cost of French State health insurance is approximately €215 for one year. We will help you sign up when you arrive.

If you are 28 years old or over, you will have the opportunity to buy a private insurance in France, or you can obtain health insurance in your own country before you arrive. If this is the case, please bring proof of this insurance with you.

> Money and Banks

Opening hours
Banks are normally open Monday to Friday from 09:00 until 16:00 (17:00 at some branches). Some banks are open on Saturday mornings or all day Saturday, in which case they are closed on Monday.

With any valid credit card, you can withdraw cash from any automated teller machine (ATM) at any bank, savings bank or post office. (Not necessarily the bank where you have your account). ATMs are open 24 hours a day and take several types of credit card (Visa, Eurocard, etc.).

Opening a bank account
You need to open a bank account in France in order to be reimbursed for your sécurité sociale. We will give you instructions on how to go about this once you are at the school.

 > Tuition fees and instalments

It is important to note that all our students, both French and foreign, pay the same tuition fees.
You will find all the information about the tuition fees and instalments in the Apply to the school section.

> Scholarships

Unfortunately, the school does not offer any. According to your country of residence and your particular situation, different possibilities of financing your studies in France may be available: government grants, funding granted by international organizations and NGOs, private fellowships...

For information regarding grants and scholarships, we recommend you contact the French embassy in your country, your local CampusFrance agency, or "CampusBourse", the CampusFrance grant search engine: see the CampusFrance website for more information.

> Getting a visa

European students
A visa is not required for students who are citizens of the following countries or zones:

  • the European Union (EU)
  • the European Economic Area (EEA)
  • Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, Switzerland or the Vatican.

Non-European students
If you reside outside the European Union, you will need to obtain a long-term student visa before your arrival in France. The request for the form must be made at the French consular services in your country of residence at least 3 months before your departure or at your local Campus France.

In order to obtain your visa, you will be asked for the following documents:

  • A valid passport
  • Proof of your admission or pre-enrolment at the L’École de design Nantes Atlantique (use your official letter of acceptance sent by post)
  • Proof of your monthly income of at least €615
  • Proof of your accommodation in France (once your residence is confirmed, we will be able to send this to you).

With your visa, you will receive a form, which you will need to complete upon your arrival in France and send to the OFII, the French immigration office. The school will help you with these procedures. You will then receive a certificate from the OFII, which you will need to keep safe and you will be called for a medical examination and an interview. You will also have to pay a tax of €58 by purchasing an OMI stamp.

If your visa carries the mention, "Dispense temporaire de carte de séjour" (temporaire exemption or the residence permit), you will not receive any form and do not have to go to the OFII.

> Mentoring

International students arriving at the school are all allocated a mentor to help them integrate into the life of the school. Mentors are student volunteers, many of whom who have already spent a semester abroad and fully understand the challenges international students are facing. Mentors are a point of contact before the arrival of the student and can, depending on their availability, meet students when they arrive in Nantes. They continue to be a helping hand to international students throughout the semester.
